Interviewer: “Has experimenting with heroin made you feel more mortal?”

Kurt Cobain: “That’s a weird question. I don’t know. I’ve never thought of that. I’m still not any more easily amused. I don’t know. There are certain privileges that I can use, and I’m grateful for that.”

Interviewer: “Money or not, at the end of the day, do you still feel you can live forever?” A long pause. “Do you want a different question?

Kurt Cobain: “No. No, I like this question. But I don’t know the answer.”

I have never been fucked up in front of a journalist. Kurt Cobain, 1993
In my dreams, there’s always this apocalyptic war going on between the right & the left wing. The last dream I had like this was 2 nights ago. Courtney & I were in the Hollywood Hills, & Arnold Schwarzenegger was my neighbor. I was completely disgusted by the whole idea of living next to these people. So I went down to where the oppressed people were starving on the streets, killing each other for a quarter. In one part of the dream I was being honored for something & the ceremony was at an S/M club, but it was a really nice one. It didn’t have chains on the wall, just beautiful flowers. Lots of stars went there. I had to make an entrance from the top of the stairs, & because of the way people think of Courtney, she happened to be this two-foot-tall black midget with huge feet. She waddled like this…” Cobain sways back & forth like Charlie Chaplin. “As soon as she made her appearance someone kicked her down the stairs. I just started screaming. Kurt Cobain
“Well, you do learn things and & one of them is that happiness has nothing to do with validation from other people. The important thing is being happy with yourself… finding something that is important to you & sticking with it no matter what anyone says. The truth is you’ve got to really be tough because there are all kinds of forces that are always trying to get you to do things their way… trying to tell you that you are throwing your life away if you don’t follow their advice.” -Kurt Cobain

Just because everyone starts wearing flannel shirts doesn’t mean they think about the world any differently. If we had changed things, you’d hear a lot better music on the radio, wouldn’t you? Kurt Cobain
I was never a bad kid… I was just disgusted and at that age, I couldn’t figure out why. The school counselor would tell me, ‘Try to fit in with people, dress the way they do, attend the dances, get into sports.’ That was always the big thing: Get into sports and your life is perfect. Kurt Cobain
I was a seriously depressed kid. Every night at one point I’d go to bed bawling my head off. I used to try to make my head explode by holding my breath, thinking if I blew up my head, they’d be sorry. There was a time when I never thought I’d live to see 21. Kurt Cobain
“I have become a lot more optimistic. Once something like marriage and a baby happens to a person, you find a lot of strength that you didn’t know you had.” -Kurt Cobain, July 1993

“Wearing a dress shows I can be as feminine as I want. I’m a heterosexual… big deal. But if I was a homosexual, it wouldn’t matter either.” -Kurt Cobain
